THE START OF WOODEN SUNGLASSES

Vilo is a family run business created by Francesca and Josh. Needing a new pair of sunglasses and tired of the same old plastic frames, Josh set out to find something better. Frustrated with the lack of progress in sunglasses design and having always loved working with wood, he discovered it could be crafted into the perfect material for making sunglasses. Not only was it incredibly light and durable but it was hypoallergenic, natural and highly sustainable. Whilst plastic was a byproduct of the oil industry, wood was grown from nature.

Josh & Francesca - Vilo Australia

A NEW DESIGN OF SUNGLASSES

"We love the natural warmth and absolute uniqueness wood has to offer. Whilst a factory can spit out 10,000 pairs of plastic sunglasses totally cloned in absolute uniformity, each pair of wood sunglasses is totally unique and a one off piece of craftsmanship that will never ever be repeated. I believe in today's crowded world, people want products that display a sense of individuality and a closer connection with nature and wood allows that opportunity like no other material."

Seeing a gap in the market they went on to create a line of wood sunglasses that were light and stylish whilst still maintaining the sun protection of UV400 filtering and polarised lenses demanded by customers today. By using laminated wood, they could make designs which were thinner and stronger whilst avoiding the thickset, clunky designs of other brands.

GIVING BACK

As a nurse and helicopter pilot, Josh & Francesca had seen many parts of the world where extreme poverty was a way of life and people were vulnerable to being exploited by those wishing to profit at other peoples expense. Seeing an opportunity to create a truly financially sustainable business model where profits were recycled back to people in need, Vilo began supporting the organisation A21, dedicated to eliminating slavery and human trafficking. To support that goal, Vilo donates 10% of all profits to A21.

"For all support we say thank you"

FAQs

Wooden Sunglasses

Wooden sunglasses are extremely lightweight and in fact up to 33% lighter than similar plastic frames. Feel light and fresh all day long.

All Vilo sunglasses are natural and eco friendly. Whereas at the end of their life, plastic sunglasses take upwards of 450 years to decompose, wooden sunglasses will break down naturally in compost. During their life they act as a carbon sink by storing CO2 in the form of sunglasses, whilst allowing another tree to grow and remove more CO2 from the atmosphere. As wood is a natural living resource, every pair is non toxic and as unique as you.

All our lenses use the latest in optical technology.

Vilo sunglasses use TAC lenses made from plant based cellulose. The composition is made from 7 individual layers providing the ultimate in colour and clarity as well as providing UV400 filtering and impact resistance.

All Vilo sunglasses are polarized

Wood is extremely durable but just like all sunglasses there are a few tips to keep them in perfect condition.

All Vilo sunglasses come with a natural bamboo hardcase. Whenever you are not using your sunglasses, place them back in the hardcase which will protect them from knocks and scratches. Never store your sunglasses loosely (on in the soft bag) in your bag, pocket etc.

Avoid leaving them in places of extreme heat such as a car dashboard. These surfaces can get as high as 69 degrees celsius which can cause the lenses to delaminate in rare instances.

Your sunglasses are finished with a natural wood wax to protect them from sweat and moisture. It's best to avoid submerging them fully but if so just rinse them thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry in a shaded area.

At this stage no. See our Wood Prescription Frame range for prescription ready frames. These frames are designed to easily insert and remove prescription lenses.
